How does SafeWise Make their Selections?
Florida, well-known for its intrepid space industry, enchanted theme parks, and pristine sandy beaches, is also home to lower crime rates than its neighbors in Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia. Property crime, one of the statistics on which the safest Florida cities are rated has even declined for the last several years for the state’s 20 safest cities. And on top of that, 80 percent of the cities reported less than 50 burglaries.
Another of the criteria in the SafeWise selection process is violent crime. SafeWise found that, on average, the top 20 cities reported less than one violent crime per 1,000 residents. In fact, the average crime rate among Florida’s 20 safest cities rank 65 percent lower than the national average (10 crimes per 1,000).
Based on this information, population statistics and the latest FBI crime report data, SafeWise was able to identify the 20 safest cities in Florida. After eliminating the cities with fewer than 3,000 residents and those who failed to complete and submit a crime report to the FBI, SafeWise then proceeded to evaluate the remaining cities. Looking at violent crimes (assault, robbery, rape, and murder) and property crimes (arson, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and burglary), calculations were made per 1,000 residents in each city.
While Longboat Key made number one on the list with no violent crimes per 1,000 people and only three property crimes per 1,000 individuals, the Brevard County cities who made the list weren’t far behind.
